New Chainguard Containers April-July 2025: Visual Studio Code Server, Grafana k6, Ollama, and More
It’s amazing that we are already in August! This year has flown by, and here at Chainguard, we have been busy. From the beginning of April to the end of July, our team has built a staggering 449 new container images, including 173 FIPS-enabled images.
You can dive into all the details about these new images, and all of our other images, in our Directory. Here is a small sampling of some of the most popular images we’ve built over the past few months:

Featured Chainguard Containers
It was difficult to select just a few from the hundreds of images we’ve built over the past few months, but we’re excited to highlight five new Chainguard Containers that bring enhanced security, compliance, and performance to your development and deployment workflows. Whether you’re looking to streamline remote development, build high-performance distributed applications, simplify Kubernetes networking, stress-test your systems, or run AI models locally, these images provide the secure, minimal foundation you need—each complete with FIPS-enabled variants for organizations with compliance requirements:
Code Server
Overview: code-server is a self-hosted version of Visual Studio Code that runs in a browser. It lets you code remotely on a server, VM, or container while accessing the IDE through your web browser.
Use Cases: code-server enables secure, browser-based development environments that can be accessed from anywhere, making it ideal for remote work, lightweight devices, and centralized, compliant team workspaces. It’s also well-suited for collaborative coding and quickly provisioning ready-to-use environments for training or workshops.
Elixir
Overview: Elixir is a functional, concurrent programming language built on the Erlang VM, known for its scalability, fault tolerance, and performance. It’s often used for building distributed systems, real-time services, and high-availability web applications.
Use Cases: Elixir is ideal for developing scalable, fault-tolerant systems such as real-time chat applications, IoT platforms, and financial transaction systems. It’s also widely used for web applications, APIs, and services that require high concurrency and uptime.
Flannel
Overview: Flannel is an open-source virtual network that provides a simple way to configure Kubernetes cluster networking. It creates a layer 3 IPv4 network between nodes, enabling seamless pod-to-pod communication across the cluster.
Use Cases: Flannel is used to provide secure and reliable networking between pods in a Kubernetes cluster, making it essential for multi-node deployments. It’s well-suited for simple, flat network topologies in both cloud-based and on-premises Kubernetes environments.
k6
Overview: k6 is an open-source load-testing tool designed for developers to test the performance, scalability, and reliability of APIs, microservices, and websites. It uses a JavaScript scripting interface for creating and running test scenarios.
Use Cases: k6 is perfectly suited for integrating performance testing into CI/CD pipelines, stress testing production-like environments, and monitoring system reliability under varying loads. It’s also used for validating API performance before deployment.
Ollama
Overview: Ollama is a platform for running and managing large language models locally, allowing users to download, serve, and interact with models without relying on cloud services. It emphasizes privacy, control, and offline capability for AI workflows.
Use Cases: Ollama is used to run LLMs in air-gapped or privacy-sensitive environments, developing AI-powered applications without sending data to external providers, and experimenting with models in a secure, local setup.
Chainguard Containers: Helping You Build Software Better
Chainguard Containers are designed to reduce engineering toil, secure your open source software foundation, and simplify and accelerate security and compliance outcomes for your organization. Our team has built over 1,600 container images for countless pieces of open source software that are all supported by a top-of-the-line SLA to make sure they remain CVE-free. These images are designed to help your team unlock value and focus on building the best products and services possible.
Don’t just take our word for it. Hear from Shift5, a Chainguard customer who was able to save time and effort moving towards compliance goals like FedRAMP with Chainguard Containers:
